Welcome to another instructional video on puppy grooming with Go Groomer! In this video, we will be giving Ellie, our 11-week-old Schnauzer, a full haircut. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to enhance your grooming skills, this guide will teach you the basics of dog grooming. We will cover how to set a Schnauzer pattern with a clipper, properly use a dog clipper and grooming shears, and work with a puppy on the grooming table. Let’s get started!
Setting the Schnauzer Pattern
Before we begin the grooming process, it’s important to make sure your dog has been freshly bathed, conditioned, brushed, and their coat is completely combed through. This ensures a smooth and comfortable grooming experience. For Ellie’s haircut, we will be using the Flash 5 Clipper from Kenshi with the quarter-inch guard comb attachment to set the pattern. The guard comb attachment allows for a consistent and even length of the coat.
To start, we will begin at the base of Ellie’s back skull and gently clip in the direction of the coat. Keeping in mind the Schnauzer pattern, we will drop off like an airplane scooping off a runway, making sure to graze off the pattern from the bend of stifle to the brisket and ribs. Utilizing the party colors on Ellie’s coat, we can follow the natural pattern to shape and blend the coat evenly.
Outlining and Shaping
Once we have established the pattern, it’s time to move on to outlining and shaping with grooming shears. For this step, we will be using the Jody Murphy Outliner shear and possibly the Kenshi peacock chunker shear for blending and shaping the coat. The blending shears and chunker shears are great tools for softening and blending the coat, ensuring a polished and professional finish.
When outlining, we pay attention to the party colors on Ellie’s coat and carefully trim around them to maintain balance and symmetry. We’ll also focus on shaping the muzzle and trimming the eyebrows to enhance Ellie’s facial features. However, it’s important to note that we will be leaving Ellie’s ears fuzzy in this video, as she is still a puppy and we want to maintain her adorable puppy look.
Scissor Finishing Work
To complete the grooming process, we’ll perform scissor finishing work to add the final touches. This involves using our shears to blend and shape the coat further, giving it a refined and polished appearance. We’ll focus on smoothing down the pattern set and ensuring that all the lines flow seamlessly. With proper scissor techniques, we can achieve a professional and well-groomed look.
